Ultrafast EV chargers live in an Australian ‘First’

In an exciting first, Viva Energy, which supplies 25% of our fuel needs from some 1330 servos across Australia, has launched the nation’s fastest multiple Electric Vehicle (EV) charging site.

In partnership with software energy technology company SwitchDin, Viva Energy’s Reddy Express Mt. Annan’s ultrafast EV charging site is the first to roll out across NSW.

Mt Annan’s chargers are capable of charging multiple EVs from just 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes. That’s five times faster than today’s common ‘fast’ chargers! And at 350kW per charger, that eclipses current market leader, Tesla’s ultrafast 250-325kW chargers.

This Australian ‘first’, and one of the fastest ‘ultrafast EV chargers’ in the world, uses SwitchDin’s Stormcloud platform to continuously monitor and manage available energy in real-time. Add that to a combo of on-site 900kWh of battery energy storage, 110kVA of solar PV inverters, and high performance EV equipment, and Viva Energy can deliver instant charging power of up to 500kW across the charging station.

There are so many good things to say about this breakthrough, not least that it places no additional burden on the grid. By being rolled out in record time, Viva Energy’s ultrafast chargers achieved reduced time-to-market and reduced time-to-revenue by many months.

Using SwitchDin’s platform, with the help of Machine Learning to forecast load, and the arbitrage system to trade in today’s dynamic energy market, this technology can help Viva Energy secure a speedy return on its investment.

Key Features & Benefits

Background

Ultrafast charging needs more electricity than the grid can offer. It can, in fact, take between 1–2 years to upgrade a site's energy utility – if grid capacity is available at all. Viva Energy needed a solution that could operate within existing grid constraints, with some sites under 100kVA, to enable up to 600kW of EV charging.

Solution

Introduce high-power energy assets at each site (up to 110kVA of solar and 900kWh of batteries), maximise the ROI of these behind-the-meter assets, optimise energy asset performance and reduce the cost-to-serve. And most importantly, satisfy the customers!

Result

By starting with a single pilot site, Reddy Express, Mt Annan, Viva Energy rigorously tested SwitchDin's advanced solution across various demanding scenarios before rolling out this, the first of its production sites in NSW. With high-power energy assets introduced at each site, Viva Energy prioritised safeguarding the operational continuity of both EV charging and on-site retail amenities to ensure customer satisfaction and enhance the overall experience.
